IU Health Evaluates Personal Health Record Approaches and Products

A private, non-profit organization, Indiana University Health owns or manages more than 18 hospitals and health centers throughout Indiana and is closely tied to the Indiana University School of Medicine, the nation’s second largest medical school. More than half of the IU School of Medicine's 970 physicians practice, supervise, and teach residents and fellows at one of IU Health's hospitals. IU Health’s gross patient revenue is over $7 billion. It has over 115,000 admissions and close to two million outpatient visits each year and employs more than 22,000 staff. IU Health is designated as a Magnet hospital system by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
THE CHALLENGE
IU Health was preparing to invest in an enterprise-wide Personal Health Record (PHR). The tool would be offered to patients and incorporate data from multiple EMR source systems across the IU Health network. The tool was to be used by providers within IU Health’s network to review patients’ medical records through a browser (with express patient consent) and include data expert capabilities for Health Information Exchange (HIE) compatibility and EMR integration.
IU Health wanted to better understand the PHR market and best practice use of PHRs within health systems across the country, expedite market analysis of the leading PHR vendor candidates, identify those that fit in IU Health’s PHR strategy, and define a short list of products that fit IU Health’s needs.
THE SOLUTION
Aspen was engaged to provide an overview of the PHR market, complete an analysis of the leading PHR vendors, and identify those that fit in IU Health’s PHR strategy. Specific engagement objectives of this two-week engagement included:
THE RESULTS
As a result of the engagement, IU Health had a clear understanding of the three types of PHR strategies (tethered, portal, and open platform PHRs) and the products in each category, along with examples of other health systems’ use of these strategies and products. The organization was armed with a clearer picture of the PHR market, the underlying architectures, and the pros and cons of various approaches.
IU Health decided to implement a PHR add-in component to a physician portal toolset they were already planning to implement. They also determined that the portal vendor they selected was able to export to an open platform PHR as well.
